Memories of Fall - Wednesday, Sep 15 2010 7:00p

Did you love an annual hayride? The smell of pumpkin pie and the sound of crunching leaves underneath your feet? Did you anticipate the first days of a new school year? Maybe you spent weeks preparing your Halloween costume? Come and share your stories of autumn!

The phenomenal success of NYC's The Moth has inspired this program for Westfield residents. Come and tell, or come and listen, to a story at this local version of 'The Moth'. 'The Moth' is a great event where people get up and tell stories based around a specific theme.Wanna-be storytellers should prepare a five-minute, true story on the posted theme. The evening will feature ten individuals (from the audience), picked randomly from a hat. All Moth stories are based on true-life experiences, and are told on in front of an audience, without notes, scripts or cheat sheets.
How it works:
*At the beginning of the evening, everyone who has a story will put his or her name in a hat. We'll pick ten names and then each storyteller will have five minutes to share their story.
*Need more of an idea how this works? Go to the themoth.org. Listen to some stories and become inspired to share your own!

Here is some background on The Moth:
The Moth, a not-for-profit storytelling organization, was founded in New York in 1997 by poet and novelist George Dawes Green, who wanted to recreate in New York the feeling of sultry summer evenings on his native St. Simon's Island, Georgia, where he and a small circle of friends would gather to spin spellbinding tales on his friend Wanda's porch. After moving to New York, George missed the sense of connection he had felt sharing stories with his friends back home, and he decided to invite a few friends over to his New York apartment to tell and hear stories. Thus the first 'Moth' evening took place in his living room. Word of these captivating story nights quickly spread, and The Moth moved to bigger venues in New York. Today, The Moth conducts eight ongoing programs and has brought more than 3,000 live stories to over 100,000 audience members.
"Help! I've lost my job and want to start my own business, but I don't have much money! What can I do?" SCORE counselors have heard this lament many times this year! It is possible to start a successful business with just a little bit of money. Buck Buchanan, a veteran SCORE counselor who has started two successful multi-million dollar businesses, will discuss some types of business you can start. He will also discuss the characteristics of successful entrepreneurs and successful companies, and how they differ from unsuccessful ones.

Hale Speaker Series - Thursday, Sep 30 2010 8:00p

Thomas Farley M.D, M.P.H was appointed New York City Health Commissioner in May 2009. One of the world's oldest and largest public health agencies, the department has an annual budget of $1.6 billion and more than 6,000 staff. In recent years the agency has undertaken a number of innovative initiatives, including a comprehensive tobacco control program, the elimination of trans fats in restaurant food, a requirement for chain restaurants to post calorie information on menu boards, and development of an electronic health record.

Before joining the Agency, Dr. Farley was chair of the Department of Community Health Sciences at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. He received his MD and Master of Public Health degrees from Tulane University. Trained as a pediatrician, he served in the Centers for Disease Control's Epidemic Intelligence Service and worked for the CDC and the Louisiana Office of Public Health from 1989 to 2000. During that period he directed programs to control various infectious diseases. He has conducted research and published articles on a wide range of topics, including Legionnaires' disease, prevention of HIV/STDs, infant mortality, and obesity. Dr. Farley is coauthor with RAND Senior Scientist Deborah Cohen of Prescription for a Healthy Nation (Beacon Press). He served as Senior Adviser to New York City Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden in 2007 and 2008.

Dr. Farley was a longtime Westfield resident. His mother, Eileen 'Mike' Farley was the first president of the Friends of the Memorial Library.
This lecture is part of the Anne M. Hale Speaker Series. This series is made possible by a grant from the Thomas Glasser Foundation and the Anne and Lee Hale Fund and is hosted by the Friends of the Westfield Memorial Library.
