Silvia Du Bois: a slave who attained her own freedom

A one-act play based on a true story

This program is possible due to the generosity of the Friends of the Westfield Memorial Library

Lisa G. Fleming does a one-woman show about Silvia Du Bois who was a slave in New Jersey. Silvia was born in Compton Tavern near Rock Mills in Hunterdon County in 1798 and died in Cedar Summit in New Jersey on May 1, 1888 (at 120 years of age!)

After her birth, she was sold to a family that moved her to New York along the Susquehanna River. She obtained her freedom and moved back to New Jersey with her baby and spent the rest of her life in the Hunterdon area. She had six children, inherited a tavern from her grandfather who she worked with living to be 120. This was documented by the records of her slave owners and her doctor, Cornelius W. Larison, who interviewed her on her 116th birthday.

Lisa tells her story as the 116-year-old woman, sitting in a rocking chair, celebrating her birthday and speaking to 'people' who have come to interview her on her birthday.

She is dressed in a costume that Douglas Palmatier copied from a picture of Silvia found in the book 'Past and Promise, Lives of New Jersey Women,' a publication produced through the 'Women's Project of New Jersey' The Women's Project of New Jersey is a nonprofit organization formed in 1984 by a group of scholars, librarians, teachers, and community activitists to retrieve and disseminate New Jersey women's history.

After the performance there will be time for questions hosted by Lisa and Audry Palmatier, playwrights.

Lisa Fleming has performed in numerous regiional and community theaters in Philadelphia, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, and extensively in New Jersey and New York. She has numerous film and TV credits. She is currently working on independent voice-over productions nationwide. She has her own Management/Productions company.

Photo Editing with GIMP - Thursday, Feb 9 2012 7:00p

Want to learn how to bring out the best in your digital photographs? Want to
