| Tuesday, May 14 7:00PM-8:00PM Multipurpose Rm | The Erie Canal in Times of War Join Tricia Shaw from Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site for a fascinating historical program on New York canals. The American Revolution and War of 1812 proved a need for the construction of the Erie Canal. Canals played a huge part in the strategies of both the Union and Confederate Armies during the Civil War. Because of New York’s many canal towns and extended canal system, the Union Army was well fed, clothed and supplied and thus able to win the Civil War. The opening of the Barge Canal in 1917 was a silent affair due to World War I. Also learn the Erie Canal’s significance during World War II and on September 11, 2001. Registration begins April 23. | ![]() | ||

| Monday, May 20 10:00AM-11:00AM Meeting Room A | Monday Morning Adult Book Discussion Group -- The Light between Oceans by M. L. Stedman The Light between Oceans by M. L. Stedman
After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day’s journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season and shore leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby.
Tom, whose records as a lighthouse keeper are meticulous and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel has taken the tiny baby to her breast. Against Tom’s judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. When she is two, Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are reminded that there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of them.
